Skynet becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29th.

We got our first glimpse of Boston Dynamics’ newest robot about a month ago after footage leaked from a presentation given by Marc Raibert, the company’s founder. But today we finally have the first official reveal of Handle, and the new video will make you wish you also had wheels instead of feet.

The leaked footage of Handle already revealed the robot’s amazing jumping abilities, as it easily leaped over an obstacle without having to slow down at all. But the extended cut shows off even more of the two-legged robot’s capabilities. Apparently, the movie RoboCop gave us a false sense of security when it came to a robot’s inability to handle stairs. Instead of collapsing like ED-209 did, Handle rolls down a small flight of steps like they’re nothing more than a ramp.

This stuff is amazing and I hope I live long enough to see robots out and about in the world. It will make up for not having jetpacks and flying cars.

Er, did you ever see Robocop? Things could get ugly real fast when they take over...

I know some people who work there through friends, I will have to ask them about this next time I see them.

Now I want you to imagine this as a wheelchair type device, carrying a paralyzed human. Of course calmed down a bit so the jiggly human bits don't break.

That would be wonderful, but I can just see law enforcement using them for crowd control during protests/demonstrations/etc. And of course the military applications would be virtually endless...

Does anyone else find this a bit unsettling. For me this is right in the middle of the uncanny valley when it's whole range of movements begin to mimic a life form. When they come for us, it won't be a human shaped terminator but something like that. And it will have frikin' laser beams too!

And thus ends the jobs of UPS, Fedex, and every other delivery person out there, along with stockers

People are worried about immigrants taking their jobs - this is the real threat to those jobs.

I won't be "controlled" by a robot. I'll weapon up for that.

Talk about using these for military operations made me think about the fear that must have been instilled when chariots were first deployed.
