House without a computer!
#1
The wife texted me today that my 2006 iMac is frozen and won't go past the grey startup screen. Oops. That was her main computer. So later, she went to my computer and did some work in it. Then went back an hour later, and it was frozen - spinning beach ball!

When I stopped home for something else, I needed to do some work related stuff on the computer. Gahhh! Spinning beach ball! I force shut down the computer. Unplugged power. Replugged power, started up.... And welcome to 10.7? My SSD with 10.9 is not even recognizable. Gahhhh!!!

Spoke with our sponsors who were very accommodating. I will try a few tricks, but they seem ready to replace it if needed. Great service!

Sucks that I don't have a 'puter in the house for the next several days. This is from my work computer 20 min away. Not sure what to do about the 2006 iMac. Still have to look at it...

Time machine was my backup.

Replace it with a nice late 2009 or even a 2010 21.5" iMac. =)

Funny, I'm in almost the exact situation... 2007 (ish?) iMac 24" seized up early last week... The drive is dead as a doornail.
Got a clone backup and a Time Machine backup (two partitions of a single drive)...
First thing I did was boot from the clone, and CLONE the clone to another drive. I don't wanna get caught having everything on ONE drive while the computer is dead!

Now that that's accomplished, I'm contemplating how old/expensive an iMac I want to replace it. I really don't want to put a lot of effort into an iMac that can only take 6Gb RAM...

Those original 24" alu iMac's are on my "good" list. Excellent form factor, nice screen, and w/ a SSD, they're pretty peppy. Bummer yours crapped out. Spiff's white iMac is just too long in the tooth, but was a decent SL machine. Of course the newer i5/i7 iMacs can be pretty awesome, so I suspect a few more eyeballs may be looking at the refurb pages.

Yeah, my 24" was a nice computer for a long, LONG time...
It's just time to move up the ladder some.

Fortunately, multiple backups, and I have a Macbook Pro at work I can borrow if I need to for a few weeks.

And yes, I've been perusing our hosts page of iMacs, and the Motherships too!

Paul, we picked up a 21.5" 2013 i7 iMac refurb awhile back (fall 2014), and it's a screamer. Looks like it's still available for $1359. Not sure if you can score a fusion or SSD, or possibly 16GB RAM for it. With 8GB, we run Mavs internally and have El Cap externally. 2015 i7 refurb's seem to vaporize pretty quickly. CL and ebay may have better deals.

IHMO, that seems like a lot of money. Seems like you are paying a premium for an i7? But then hampered by a small 21" screen.

An i5 with fusion drive would be far faster in day to day tasks.

Not gonna argue... we replaced a 20" white 2006 iMac at the time, and didn't get the 27" alu because it didn't fit inside the hutch. Moving it in front of the hutch area would be too close to the tip of the user's nose, or removing the built in stand wasn't in the cards, so not a realistic option to go big. Should have noted the fusion drive here, and it sure did seem a bit pricey at the time, but amazingly the prices on the 2013's seem to have held up better than most. Thought was, that premium paid for i7 was future-proofing a little bit, and (perhaps stupidly) thought it would help w/ running the VM's on that machine. If it wasn't for the VM's, it woulda been an i5.

You are now faced with something more horrible than most of us can imagine. You may have to actually...dare I say it...converse with members of your family in lieu of staring slack-jawed at a computer screen. Can you possibly emerge from this experience sane? We wait with bated breath to find out.

Well, VMs are a "special needs" kinda thing, so I could see an i7 for that.

Thankfully it uas USB 3, so running a SSD boot drive via USB 3 is a great option/solution/speed up since no fusion drive. That wil make it much faster.
