It depends on the computer and OS. USB 2.0 can be up to 95% of the speed of FW400.

My experience has been that FW 400 is at least 50% faster than USB 2.

Your experience is biased. Apple always treated USB 2.0 as a ginger step-child in both hardware and software. USB 2.0 under Windows can have faster continuous throughput than FW400 on any Mac.
