Whats the difference between USB 3.0 and 3.1? SCAM ALERT
#1
I can't figure it out. It sounds like a scam.

USB 3.1 specification takes over existing USB 3.0's SuperSpeed USB transfer rate, now calling it USB 3.1 Gen 1, and introduces a faster transfer rate called SuperSpeed USB 10 Gbps, also called USB 3.1 Gen 2,[54] putting it on par with a single first-generation Thunderbolt channel.

So they basically introduced USB 3.1, gave it the same functionality as 3.0 and then, in a stroke of genius, USED THE SAME GODDAMN NAME FOR A FASTER VERSION - USB 3.1...wait for it... Gen 2.

My only hope is that plenty of drinking occurred. and everyone had a good time.

Yeah, it's confusing and silly.

Your quote comes from this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_3.0#USB_3.1

Two year old discussion: What "USB 3.1" is, and isn't (for the new MacBook, especially)

It is an extremely messy standard that is the result of a large consortium making all the consortium members happy.

Most Mac users are shocked that there is a new port on their MacBooks. Thundercrap needed a cheaper implementation and mass production is what was required. Proper implementation of USB 3.1 Gen2 through a USB-C connector will take several years to filter down to the cheap $20 external USB cases. It isn't helped that it took Apple a year to put Thunderbolt 3 on a MBP, and still doesn't have a Mac Pro with the port.
