AirPlay Display Why?

if my MPB 2011 OS Xo 10.9.5 cannot send video signal to the Apple TV (I would need OS X 10.10 for that), then why, in the name of love, do I get this options in the System Preferences?

It would work on an old version of AppleTV iOS software on an AppleTV. It senses the AppleTV, but can't work with the newer AppleTV iOS.

Mine does fine w/Mavs. But I am using an ApTV2. I think the iOS is older.
