Thanks for the heads up.
For $8 more you can opt for the hub version with USB ports on the front

FYI: 3 of 5 of those I've got have had significant SMART failures in the 1st year.
Good for storing a lot of data, but I'd strongly suggest getting 2 so you can have a backup of the 1st.
Eggs/Basket, yah know?

Yeah, I was wondering about that. If the drive were high quality, it wouldn't be that cheap.
Are there actually any drives with better than mediocre build quality and reliability these days?

USB ports on the front seem cool, like a hub.
Onamuji, are those the 8 TB models? I think I saw on Toms that these 8TB are brand new models/drives.

Not brand new model drives in there. Same models as last year.
I just got another one last month and cracked the case to pull it out for another purpose.
Problem is that these are the cheapest 8TB drives around so it's hard not to buy them when you need lots of storage for big projects and big backups. But they're junk.
So, yeah. Buy two at a time. That's what I've been doing.
...
Edit: To clarify, 3 of my 5 originally purchased have had major SMART errors, usually exhibiting DMA (r/w) errors first, which doesn't necessarily point to the drive, but often indicates a defect with the cache on the board. I've been buying
replacements in pairs.

And there's a hub version for the Mac at the same price (don't know what the difference is besides color):
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JS7OJG6
The only other difference is that the Mac version comes pre-initialized in the HFS+ format. They have a note on both drives that included is driver software to allow the drive to be used on the other OS. Do not know if they include both the HFS+ driver for Windows and the NFS driver for OS X in with each or just one driver.

I've been in panic mode since SuperDuper! failed to copy new files from my iMac drive (2009 2TB, iMac 1l,1) Thursday night. Dave at SD! says it was Read/Write errors, which he says indicate a failing drive. The drive has SMART 'failing' status anyway, so I figured I better stop using the iMac until I can replace the drive or switch to an external, or something; see my 'Unanswered Question thread here:
http://forums.macresource.com/read.php?1,2194223
Is it possible the Read errors are not from the drive itself, but the iMac board?

As for those Amazon drives, I haven't had good luck with Seagates. The Western Digital drives I've bought from Best Buy have fared better.
