I just bought a classical guitar...any string reccomendations?
#1
I picked up a cheap Yamaha classical guitar - CG122MSH - on the interwebs...$219.

My only concession to not cheapness was that it does have a solid Spruce top.

It was tuned down quite a bit when I got it. It seems to take a long time for the strings to stabilize after tuning it up, especially the high E string. Is this normal?

Anyhow, I'm sure the strings are cheapies; does anyone have any suggestions for new ones?

No idea. My air Stratocaster doesn't have strings.

If the strings are not staying in tune, that usually means they are new and need stretching before they become stable. Now what kind of strings they are (good or bad) - dunno.

Is there any particular reason why you don't like the stock strings? (too heavy, too light, too ugly?).

Otherwise - what Spiff said - they are likely new strings and need to stretch a bit. Tune..wait a day...tune again...wash, rinse, repeat for a few days and then decide whether or not you need to replace them.

I changed the strings on a friend's classical once. I was shocked that it was days before they stretched out and stayed in tune!

I can do basic setups for steel string guitars (acoustic or electric), but I don't mess with my wife's classical guitar when it needs restringing. We take that sucker to a tech.

Most classical strings take a much longer time to stabilize than steel strings, and even then, aren't as stable as steel strings.

For many classical players, D' Addario Pro Arte EJ45 strings are considered "neutral" in tone. I put them on guitars I sell. Personally, I like Savarez 540R Alliance/HT Classic NT for a little brighter tone. I stick with medium tension.

I have to say that this thing isn't murder on the fingers like a steel string guitar.

With steel strings, one can pull in then to get them to stretch, don't know if you can do that with the nylons...
