I wanted to take my new MacBook Air on my latest trip but found it too heavy compared to my ancient 11" AIR. I thought OK what about iPad Pro and 11" AIR? Those two together weighed the same as my new MacBook Air. So I ended up just taking the iPad. Really disappointed the new 13" AIR is so heavy. The trip didn't have wifi as it turns out so glad I just took the iPad. Seems that is the only choice for weightless travel.

It must be rough.
I'd hate to be you with these kinds of life complications
I don't know how you endure the pain of living.

Take me along on any future trips and I'll happily carry those heavy electronics for you.

I think the 9.7” iPad Pro plus the Apple keyboard cover is about the best near full mobile computing solution from Apple.

We've gone through rounds of trying to keep my mother able to travel with a "computer". She's 88 and broke her left arm last summer, a break which could not be properly set. So she now has more limited use of that arm. She was already weak. When we looked at the iPad mini before she broke her arm even that was too heavy for her to use. But she loves her iPhone, and uses her iMac at home all the time.
I don't find my 2010 hand-me-down 13" unibody MacBook Pro too heavy for travel. But we got 13" MacBook Airs for my younger kids in college and for my wife when she needed a laptop.
What works for one person might not for another. Glad we have a variety of choices.
Good luck.

What's the keyboard like? I've not focussed on that combination.
I had a Kindle Fire which I used for a short time until I couldn't get straight answers about backups out of Amazon, and use my wife's old iPad (the original one) to play music sometimes. But I hate touch screen keyboards. While I use my iPhone a lot, I try to avoid typing on it if I can. I type poorly enough on a regular keyboard.
My guess is that I'd get frustrated by the siloing of info on an iPad - I like to be able to get into anything on my Mac. And the lack of Keychain Access fully synced with my Mac would probably be a deal-breaker for using an iPad as a travel "computer".

Im gonna 1 up that and say the 10.5" Pro is.
Its barely a touch bigger physically -- but bigger screen and the 10X processor kicks ass over the 9X. Double the ram and double the multi core speeds (3 cores vs 2 on the 9X)
Lots of great keyboards for it, even some cool backlit ones. Althought they ceartianly add more heft than the apple one

My family likes their macs, but uses keyboards and Apple Pencils on their iPads.
My wife is the one who has moved away from a travel Mac. She finds the Apple keyboard usable but not as good as her Mac.
When traveling, are you working or having fun? The iPad serves her travel needs - even with her graduate classes - fine.
