Sweet nothingness -- candymaker to shut down
#1
The New England Confectionary Company, which makes Necco Wafers and other sweets, said last month it will permanently close its factory unless it finds a buyer by May 6.

The candy company has been making iconic candies like Necco Wafers and Mary Janes since 1847.

I remember buying Neccos for 5¢ a roll. I think they were 25¢ the last time I bought some.

Hmmm...

I fondly remember the candy "buttons" on the roll of paper, but more because they were unique and fun than tasty.

As iconic candies go, Necco Wafers are most famous to me because they were notoriously the worst treat in the bottom of the bag at Halloween.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the company has been kept afloat for years (maybe decades) by Valentine's sales of Sweethearts ( http://www.necco.com/Candy/Sweethearts/History.aspx ).

I'm here in Massachusetts and wish local companies well, but it's not like they haven't had time to come up with something better than Necco wafers.

I loved Necco Wafers. Well, all except the chocolate wafers. They were gross.

Those candy dots were practically tasteless, but you got a huge roll for a penny. Colors and sugar, but little to no actual taste.

But they were only a penny! Good times.

To each his own; I'm not a chocolate person, so I gravitate towards other candies, and Necco Wafers fit the bill. Love them, and was always happy to trade.

But agree with RAMd®d; the chocolate ones are gross.

They also make Clark bars, I think. When I still ate that sort of thing, I liked those.

There's been a huge run on Necco Wafers since the announcement. Seriously.

Never heard of Necco Wafers so i googled it. They are described as chalky. Are they similar to Smarties in taste and texture?

On the first page there's this:
The 10 worst Halloween candies, ranked

https://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/10/the-10-...ies-ranked

From the article:
"I’m convinced these are a decades-long prank put on by someone, a prank that I’m too stupid to figure out, but a brilliant prank all the same. No one in the world likes Necco Wafers. No one. Zero people. I have never, ever met anyone who likes them, and if someone tells you they do, they’re a liar. And yet, still, these “candies” exist. Well played, prankster who got us with this trick. Good job."
