Costco-1, Apple Pay-0
#1
I made a trek to a Costco Monday morning for provisions and planned on trying Apple Pay.

They didn't replace their POS terminals, but added an NFC reader to the top edged of the terminal. It has the 'radio wave' icon and shows 'Tap to Pay'.

I used my Watch and both the rear and Watch acknowledged my attempt to use Apple Pay. But it didn't work. I tried twice but the reader showed 'Invalid PIN'. So Costco, along with some other vendors, require a PIN with it. Not a problem.

The problem, however, is the reader doesn't ask for a pin. It immediately replies with 'Invalid PIN' skipping the step where the PIN is requested. My non-NFC card work fine.

All give them a call later and see what they have to say.

I never tried to use Apple Watch to pay...

I use the iPhone at other merchants and it usually works. Will try the iPhone next time I go to Costco.

I've seen that error a few times.

It means there's a communications error and the transaction wasn't completed. If you try again too quickly, it will continue to fail.

Step back for a moment, slowly count to 20 and then try it again.

Huh, at that point it would be faster to pay by CC.

No Apple Pay readers at my Costco. Yet. But they did have the very berry sundae back on the menu. Much to my daughter's delight Smile

I thought they said they installed them at ALL Costco locations.

Used Apple Pay from my AppleWatcha few days ago at my Costco.

FYI, if you have the Citi Costco credit card, the new card readers support "tap to pay".

But if you are paranoid about CC theft, applepay is way more secure.

My wife uses her watch a bunch of places, including trader joes. Hold it up, tap, done. Waitress at Chilis had never seen it before, she just put her watch under the silly table top thing and away we went...

Yeah, that won't happen.

At another vendor, I might try that. But given the lines at Costco, it would be like writing a check. I'm one of those people who turn up all my products in the cart so the UPC is plainly visible. I don't want to be That Guy who's tech slows down the process.

I'm curious as to why it skips the ENTER PIN step in the first place. Nobody ahead of me used AP. But if there's nobody behind me next time, I'll give that a try.

Unrelated, lately when I double click the side button, I sometimes get 'Card unavailable. Try again in a few minutes.' I try again immediately, and I get 'Ready'. It works flawlessly at all my other Apple Pay stops. (I tried it just now and it woke up right away.)

I never tried to use Apple Watch to pay...

I've set it up on all my Watches because my 5s couldn't do Apple Pay. When I got my SE, I had to look up how to use it, but haven't bothered trying. It's just so convenient to use the Watch. But you might have to set it up on the Watch as well. Any way, double click the side button, it says Ready... Hold near reader... You get a Taptic click, done. The display shows a check mark.

They're easy to miss. Just a slim addition to the upper edge of the reader. There was a white stripe of paper along the top of the reader saying 'Tap to pay'. Without that, it could almost pass for a skimmer. LOL

But they did have the very berry sundae back on the menu.

That's a trade off I could live with while waiting. I got a pepperoni slice on the way out. If I'd seen the Berry Bery Sundae, I'd have to one to neutralize any negative dietary aspects of the slice.

Just called Costco:

Yes, they have the Berry Berry Sundae and hot dogs, just not the Polish.

It took quite awhile to get the CSR to understand that maybe somebody who oversees the NFC IT stuff should be made aware of my experience.

'Do you remember what register you were at?'

'No, but it might not be just at one register.'

I may see if I still have the receipt and try tomorrow, hoping to get someone else.
