Getting older sucks sometimes. I have not really been feeling well for about 6 months. I've been to the Dr. several times and everything checked out ok, he ran a couple EKG's in the office. I've had blood work about twice this year in his office and there's nothing really out of whack, my total cholesterol is 201 a tad high, my BP is good, WBC count is near the high end, my thyroid checks out good and etc. I've been riding an exercise bicycle about 2 or 3 days a week for about 4 to 6 miles each time at a pretty brisk pace, wanting to bring that up to maybe 8-10 miles and more days per week. Some of you know I've had health problems in the past but nothing with BP, heart or brain. I've had failed lumbar spinal fusion and inner ear surgery to try and help control my Meniere's disease.
Two weeks ago I went to my eye Dr. because I just got new glasses a year and a half ago and now I can barely read. He checks my eyes and and says yes they've changed a lot and he tells me I have cataracts on both eyes. He said with as fast as the cataracts came on it could be as quickly as 6 months but it could also be 6 years or more before they can remove them. So we order new glasses and they came in yesterday and the lady trying to adjust them cracks one of the lenses, so another week with glasses that are difficult to read with.
Now about last weekend, Friday I was just in the house getting ready to fix some lunch, we had just returned from checking on how our son was doing with the hay field he was mowing down. I had felt fine all morning then all of a sudden I had tightness in my chest and severe chest pain. My wife was like are kidding and I said no. I did what everyone says to do and had her call 911. The paramedics came out and monitored my heart for a minute or two and they loaded me up and took my the nearest ER. While en route my right side went completely numb and I couldn't pick up my right arm or leg. They started doing numerous tests, can't remember everything they did in the ER. I know they took blood and had me hooked up to a heart monitor. They did a CT scan from my waist to the top of my head and it showed nothing wrong. The ER Dr. thought maybe I had a torn aorta or something in which he said I would have to be flown to somewhere else. Later that afternoon they did an MRI of my head and that showed no bleeds or clots. Saturday morning they did a nuclear stress test and that was good. They also done an extensive ECG of my heart, it was good. They gave me the option of staying until Monday to see a Neurologist but we decided to let them go ahead and make an appointment with a Neurologist and go home and follow up with my GP this week, which I see tomorrow. I had not had anymore bad chest pains since about 7 Friday evening.
They never completely ruled out a very mild stroke but felt sure I had not had a heart attack. They didn't see any evidence of either. The right side extremities going numb with no strength for several hours seem to kinda have them baffled.
So I'm kinda in limbo as to what's going on. Like I told my wife, what should I do if it happens again, just sit and wait to see if it goes away or what? I've never had a panic or an anxiety attack out of the blue. I used to have some acid reflux but with meds that's been under control for quite a while. My wife also bought me an adjustable foundation for my bed and I've been able to cut my generic Prilosec back to every 2 or 3 days, I'd like to get off of it all together. I'm not sitting around worrying about when or if it might happen again.
I'm glad they didn't find anything serious but on the other hand it would have put me a little more at ease if they could have said, "here's what we think happened and here's where we go from here", if you know what I mean. Sorry for the long spell but if I talk much about it all my wife starts getting worried and I've put here through enough over the 31 years we've been married. She's a keeper that's for sure.
