I'm having trouble getting worked up about this even if they were active. An airline seat isn't a private area, I expect about the same level of privacy as walking through the aisles of Walmart.
And on the tray table of most seats is a passenger's computer, tablet, or phone that also has a camera, and those devices are likely connected to the internet, unlike the seat back entertainment system. Those passenger devices are often pointed at angles and their camera's field of view can likely include other passengers nearby.

I found the airline response the funniest part - a simpler answer would be that every single passenger has at least one active camera on them at all times so why not add a few built in?!

I'd agree if these cameras were like those in buses or our BART system — overhead providing a general view of a broad segment of the interior and passengers. A camera in the seat back always 'in your face' does give me pause. However, a little color-matched opaque sticker and all's well. When someone comes to tell you to remove it, then maybe it's not so inactive.

You have no expectation of privacy on an airplane. I could sit next to you and record you for the entire flight and there is nothing you can do about it.
Honestly, they should enable them from a safety perspective. I’m certain it would make people flying alone feel safer. |
