I bought an Apple branded SSD on eBay to put in a 2014 MBP that I own. Bought it on 02/11 and it shipped on 02/12 with USPS from California to Illinois. Right after it left Cal, it disappeared. USPS had said it was due to arrive at my place on 02/15. It still isn't here and the postal service doesn't know where it is. Today is 02 22.
I have been in contact with the eBay seller. He has a very good feedback rating, that's why I went with him to begin with. His response is that we need to sit tight for the next week and see if it turns up- already a week late.
My question. I paid with a credit card, he has my money- $190. Any recourse I have other than to do as he requests and sit tight? I needed this drive last week for a project I'm working on.
I'm open to your input on this one, I've never encountered it before and I've bought a lot of stuff on eBay.

You don't have to sit tight. The seller is responsible for getting that item into your hands. If it doesn't make it, he's at fault (that's the way ebay sees it). If it's one day past its due date, you can file a claim with ebay stating that you haven't received it. The process will take some time, but will absolutely end in your favor.
Lost USPS packages is tricky. If it wasn't delivered to a wrong address, they USUALLY reappear and eventually get delivered. You might consider calling the Post Office where the package was last scanned and tell them the story. I recently saw a package heading my way, but in Texas it went back and forth between two POs for a week then stopped moving altogether. Then was delivered a week later ????

IIRC, the official ebay wait period is pretty long before they'll bring the hammer down. You can open a claim, but they may say "wait x days and if no show, we'll proceed."

Yea, just open up a not received case. You probably can at this point as you can open the case after the eBay delivery window has passed. Then it looks like you have to wait 6 more days before you can ask eBay to make a final ruling, at which point they give themselves 2 days to do so (though it's often been very quick in cases like this). So get the ball rolling on the not received case, you can always close it later if the item does show up.

I did just now open the case with eBay. Waiting on a response from the seller. I previously asked him to send me a replacement. He said he doesn't do that. So today as I opened the case I asked for a refund. I'm now on the clock with eBay. We'll see.
Thanks for the responses. I didn't think I was being unreasonable, just had never opened a case with eBay before and I've been on there since 1999.

What Gareth said, although they shipped it, you haven’t received it. USPS doesn’t know where it is, the seller is responsible for filing a claim.

I seriously doubt calling the Post Office would get you anything, in this instance.
You could file a claim at your local PO but they'd send it on to the seller who'd then do the actual filing.
Contacting eBay is your best bet, so good that you did that.
Personally, I would have waited a few more days, maybe 30 before doing anything else, unless the seller felt slim-shady to you. I don't know if he met that criteria or not.
Sure he is responsible to get the item to you, but any shipper can screw up a delivery. I had a FedEx issue that ended with a refund, not my first choice, but ultimately acceptable.
Looking forward to your Follow Up.

you'd be surprised what an actual human in the right location can do - this has worked for me in the past

NO! He's not the shipper, he can't file a claim.

No reason to wait - you can stop the process at any time, but there is no reason to not get it started. If you wait TOO long, you will lose the right to file a claim.

It's up the seller to make it right for the buyer, the seller can then go to the shipper to file a claim. Insurance is also the seller's responsibility.

Lots of weather problems across the U.S. in the last two weeks. Interstate 5 was closed for snow just North of L.A. mobile.twitter.com/CHPFortTejon/status/1098689288202444800 Interstate 80 has been closed off and on since Feb. 4.
I would have waited 48 hours after it was due, then filed a claim with ebay (assuming I had been desperate enough to use them).

Muffman- I agree, however, the due date was Feb 15- I waited way more than 48 hours. And no desperation, I've gotten some good deals and look at seller's feedback. The guy looked good.
