Okay, how about this? Would you have a more positive opinion of someone if that person climbed El Capitan?

How about if they’re only ten years old?

Quite an accomplishment. I was a youthful brachiator as well. Not technical, though. And I did infamously fall down a scree slope above Yosemite falls and ALMOST went down into the falls. Dad saved me.

When I was in Yosemite the first time, about 25-30 years ago, they had to rescue a climber with a helicopter. Unless the climbers that are saved that way are financially responsible for paying back the cost of their rescues, then I'm not really impressed by people who climb things.

Strange question and poll.

Okay, I realize that the poll is for fun, but my opinion of someone has little to do with their accomplishments. Yes, I'm impressed as hell with the accomplishment, but that has little to do with my opinion of the person.

Michael Jordan was one of the top five basketball players ever (maybe the top). However, my understanding is that he is a total ass and just a generally unpleasant person with whom to spend time.

Accordingly, my opinion of his accomplishments (very high) is very different from my opinion of him as a person (not positive).

The 10 year old climbs El Capitan, not Half Dome.
El Capitan is 3,000 feet of sheer cliff, and a huge accomplishment.
Half Dome (not the face) is more of a long hike, with no rock climbing experience or gear needed.
I did it years ago and it was awesome!!!
I rock climbed some in College, but only easy routes and not very often.

But has she drunk from a garden hose?

I'm sure the parents are getting an earful from the over-protective busybodies. After all, they know what is best for everyone else's children.

Ya see those trees down there? No, not the pointy ones casting shadows, the lumpy ones that look like a carpet. I don't even like climbing those. Feet on the ground for me, thanks.

I once knew a teacher who ran marathons and I was impressed. Then he was caught shoplifting candy bars and lost his job.

My positive opinion kinda flew out the window.
