DOJ wants Apple, Google to relinquish user data of rifle scope app

As part of an investigation into potential weapons export violations, the U.S. Department of Justice is demanding both Apple and Google furnish user information for a rifle scope monitoring and control app, a move that could impact well over 10 thousand people.

As part of an investigation into potential weapons export violations, the U.S. Department of Justice is demanding both Apple and Google furnish user information for a rifle scope monitoring and control app, a move that could impact well over 10 thousand people...

If successful, the order would net the government an enormous amount of private user information in one fell swoop, including data of consumers who are not participating in illegal activity. According to the report, the proposed order is unprecedented in its scale, at least compared to similar requests that have been made public.

Hey, if you have nothing to hide...

In related news, the DOJ has ordered a super-sized kreel from Cabela's.

I researched this long ago. All of the needed info is in a book or online even.

Books on reloading are very good for speed rang and drop.

How many different rounds are you firing thru your weapon?

200 yards flat is my only rule.

This is nothing more than a warm fuzzy talking point aimed not at a real rifleman that might hit the target,
the person that mounts an iPhone to a rifle is not a threat.

The threat here is how the DOJ is trying to FEAR folks into surrendering a privacy foothold "of private user information in one fell swoop, including data of consumers who are not participating in illegal activity"that once lost is LOST.

DOJ Official: When I said, "broaden the scope of the investigation," this not what I had in mind.

DOJ Intern: Oops. My bad.

How ironic, the DOJ wants private citizens' data yet to date, American & Mexican
citizens are denied the truth about "Operation Fast and Furious".

As an avid air rifle shooter this saddens me. Air rifles obey the same laws of physics as firearms but on a shorter range. This means that at times plotting a target range can be more like aiming a mortar that firing a rifle. Airgun pellets usually have a diabolo shape, meaning a fat heavy head, a thin waist and a wide base. This means that they’re drag stabilized like a badminton birdie. This shortens the effective range but makes them very accurate within that range. There have been numerous ballistic calculators for the iPhone and the math is nothing special. It’s basic physics for the most part. The app just makes it easier. Since airguns are frequently assumed to be low power (hint: there are 50cal airguns, so not low power) they’re often specifically excluded in hunting regs. This means that airguns are used to hunt things like rats, squirrels, collared doves and other pests or invasive species. Airgunners frequently use cameras or phones to capture video or display night vision imagery to do this. ATX has many very popular scopes with quite a bit of tech built in. It’s a shame when someone from the government with an agenda and a half formed opinion about something jumps in like a bull in a china shop.

another example that this ISN'T about saving lives.

Outlaw alcohol, and mandatory vaccinations for anyone in the US, or crossing into the US. That's got to be about 100K lives a year right there. Both are in the best interests of the population. But that's NOT the goal, is it?

CA outlawed .50 rifles and there's no telling how many lives that's saved.

I remember that. How many gang banger drive bys were prevented by taking away Barret M82 5' long bolt action rifles?

Response? .408 CheyTac.

CA outlawed .50 rifles
well they had to do something to rid the streets of gang banger's cars equipped
with Ma Deuces :emoticon-tv-015:

But 10,12, and 20 gauge shotguns are OK, right?
Yet those have bores larger than 0.50 and can fire slugs.

Celebrities/Politicians protected by armed security forces demanding the rest of
