Wireless charging of iPhone. What are the benefits?
#1
So what exactly are the benefits of wireless charging? Whether I plug it in or I have to lay it on the charger....

It's literally easier? No physical wear to lightning port? Mostly it's just easier.

Grumpy,

Come home, drop phone on charger. Done. No messing with cords. That in itself makes wireless charging worthwhile. It also frees the lightning port for other tasks while charging the phone. Wireless charging is one of the reasons I like my Apple Watch. Wish I had it for my iPhone 6S. Maybe when I decide to replace the Otterbox case I'm using with a model that has a built-in battery that supports wireless charging...

This.
I really like just plopping the phone down rather than futzing with a cable each time.
No problem with snagging the cable and pullling the phone to the floor or something either.

Does Otterbox (or someone else) make a battery case for iPhone that charges wirelessly?

Qi wireless charging will work through a standard non=metallic iPhone cases (the thicker the case, the less efficient the charge), but these days many of us have pop-grips or mounts on our cases, and extra space or metal behind the phone makes wireless charging a pain. More details here.

rjmacs,

There are a slew of battery cases for the 6S that support wireless charging. Otterbox doesn't seem to have one, though.

More details here. With regards to charging and grips on the back. My wife has a Loopy case and they recommended the Belkin Qi charger. It has been working great with no issues.
I like being able to just drop it on the Qi charger. I have a Sabrent charger. It has a colorful ring around the whole thing to let you know if your phone is charging. Not just a little dot like most Qi chargers.
Slow charge is also good for the battery.

To get an older phone to charge wirelessly you can buy a Qi charging pad. BUT, the only pre Qi charging phone I would get a Qi charging pad for would be a 6s plus, 7 plus. The larger phones because the Qi charging pads block the port.

A lot of the wear and tear on an iPhone and iPad come from the insertion and removal of the Lightning cable. I like wireless charging so much that I added $13 Qi modules between my iPad and its protective case, plugged into the Lightning port (of my last iPad) and the USB C port (of my current iPad) - and never plug them into a cable.

The new iPad is a bit topheavy resting in the stand-up cradle, but it’s supported by a tall pad of paper and works great. Charging is a bit slower than a cable would provide but it’s fast enough.
