I tired one more thing - restoring without using my apple account. It works fine. Soon as I log in it goes back to searching. Restoring from icloud backups or itunes yields the same results. Verified on both iPhone SE's, issue replicates easily. Crazy. I have a slot of stuff in the itunes account/icloud, but looks like I have to let it go. Crap. But the phone's working normally on an alternate account. So...yay?

So then the question is...could you retire that backup to a newer phone, presumably with more memory? Maybe what your SE has been trying to tell you is that it was searching for space to put all of that stuff?

It went from a 16 gb to a 128 gb, so no.

wow, that is really strange, but glad you were able to finally figure it out. Had no clue that an Apple ID could somehow prevent the cell connection from happening. What did apple say when you told them this? I wonder if there's anything they could do on their end to fix.

Have not told apple. A little googling shows apple kind of shrugs their shoulders at this problem. It is easy to replicate. Cell signal returns immediately when that account is signed out. That account is paid for (.99 cents a month 50 gb), and in good standing. Some corruption somewhere. I'll look and see if I have any ancient backups I could restore from itunes, which my work, but I'm not hold out hope.

I am confused. I suggested this so long ago. from the first thread. You said you tried it and it did not work back then. Something does not ad up. I am glad your phone is working, sorry you wasted all this time. Now march into the Apple Store and show them the issue.

SIM: you tried multiple SIMs, even T-Mobile SIMS. Thus SIM cannot be the reason
What is left? Apple ID. if I understand it correctly, you always used your Apple ID with all these combinations. something weird is going on, try a new Apple ID (spouse, kid, friend, or even make a new Apple ID just to test).
Done. Same results.

So did you use someone else's account, or is it possible to do a restore (to factory) without an account?
Either way, I'd hound Apple at least 'till a senior engineer said 'no joy'.

Wiped the phone and set up with no apple id. Then added a different ID.

Did this on 12.4 - is running 12.4.1 now, dunno if that makes the difference. I used another ID before too and it didn't work Key diff here is setting up initially with no ID, then adding another one.
