Macbook Pro won't boot
#1
My daughters MacBook Pro makes a chime noise when booting but the screen remains black. I've tried the normal things such as resetting SMC, PRAM, open and close lid, etc. It is a model a1398 emc 2673 (early 2013 15"). From what I have read the problem is most likely the motherboard. I know it isn't worth sending to Apple. Any further suggestions or do I simply replace? Thanks.

Turn the brightness up? Try external monitor? Start in safe mode? From external drive?

Is it on anything magnetic, or stacked on top of another MBP?

Magnets can cause it to think the cover is closed and turn off the backlight or force sleep.

I tried turning up the brightness, no joy! :-(

No magnets or other laptops around it. Tried in multiple locations.

External drive did not work.

Safe mode did not work.

Good suggestions. No indication of drive activity or fan noise.

Have you tried booting it with an external display?

Sorry I forgot about the external display. Unfortunately I don’t have one. I’ll google one in the morning.

Doesn't that model have HDMI out, seems like a TV is something easy to test with.
