The search for Maeve Kennedy McKean and her eight-year-old son Gideon "has
turned from rescue to recovery," Kennedy McKean's mother said in a statement
Friday night. The pair were last seen in a canoe off Chesapeake Bay on Thursday
evening.

"With profound sadness, I share the news that the search for my beloved daughter
Maeve and grandson Gideon has turned from rescue to recovery," said Kathleen
Kennedy Townsend, daughter of Robert F. Kennedy and former Maryland
lieutenant governor.

"My heart is crushed, yet we shall try to summon the grace of God and what
strength we have to honor the hope, energy and passion that Maeve and Gideon
set forth into the world," Kennedy Townsend said. "My family thanks all for the
outpouring of love and prayers as we grieve and try to bear this devastating loss."

That's one unfortunate (extended) family.

Lesson learned: if the ball falls into the water, get another ball. Leave the canoe trip for another day.

It's a senseless loss, one among so many these days that go unremarked.

That family has terrible luck with any form of transportation.
What a tragedy - yet again.

Not to diminish the severity of the loss, but it's a very large family, and accidents happen to everyone.

I haven’t seen any mention of life vests in anything I’ve read so far about it.

Here's a report that suggests that they were not: https://wjla.com/news/local/coast-guard-...edy-family

It's so shortsighted to not wear life jackets. I swam in high school and college and was a lifeguard for a couple of summers. So, I'm very water-comfortable. But, my wife and I both wear jackets when we kayak on a 125 acre local reservoir even though the most we ever see are 4" swells from the wind. It's just too dumb not to wear them. And to not wear them on Chesapeake Bay...

And especially since the water is probably frickin cold still...

An awful loss, esp as it concerns a small child.
