What is the go to recovery software for a FAT 32 usb drive?

I can run it on windows 10 or OS 10.11

Hopefully free.

I know at one time I had some free software that came with my CF cards.

PhotoRec is free, runs on a lot of platforms. On OS X it runs from the terminal, no GUI.

Thanks GGD. But it PhotoRec is literally crashing on a virgin install of Windows 10 on a HP laptop. Not impressed. It locks up the machine every time.

Give it a try on the Mac. It doesn't care what the file system is on the drive, it's just looking at the data from the files.

and both 7.1 and 7.2 beta, downloaded either through ff or safari are declared damaged by my machine, and won't run them.

What is being declared damaged? The compressed file that's being downloaded, or does that download and expand OK, and it's when you try running the tool from a terminal window?

To run it, you need to open the Terminal app and run it from the command line prompt. You can drag the "photorec" tool file from the expanded download to the terminal window and it will fill in the complete path to the file and you just need to hit return.

This gives more directions on how to use it.
