Mail won't accept password or quit
#1
Hi all, I'm having trouble with loging into the Mail app. I'm running Sierra on a MacBook Air ( early 2015. When I open the Mail app, I get a error message "Can't connect to the account "JEB's Email" Enter the password for the user "jeb". I enter the correct password and get another error message "unable the verify account name or password. I try to quit mail but it hangs up until I need to do a Force Quit to leave the Mail app. All the Apple updates are up to date. Please help. Thank-you.

What mail service/servers, perhaps it/they are down. Or changed. Sometimes deleting mail servers from your keychain then re-adding works. Perhaps your keychain is damaged. Have you tried a different device? Are you syncing with iCloud?

Open the System Preferences > Internet Accounts panel and click on each account in-turn. If prompted for a password, enter your account password.

...

Open Apple Mail and a quickly as you can do so, click on the Mailbox menu and select "Take all accounts offline." Then click on the Window menu and select "Connection Doctor." Give it a minute to update the contents of the Connection Doctor window. What, if any, status message(s) does it display?

When I go to Preferences>Internet Accounts and click on JEB's Email it asks for the password and then I get the same error message i.e. Can't connect to the account "JEB's Email"

After "Taking all accounts offline: and running the Connection Doctor it says: "trying to log into this POP account failed.Verify that the username and password are correct." and "Could not connect to this SMTP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences. Also Verify that the server supports SSL.If it does not, deselect the the "Use SSL" checkbox in the Advanced tab of the Account preferences.

The problem appears to be the Outgoing email settings for the account. If you set up the account using the default options in Mail then it's set to automatically manage connection settings. Sometimes those automatic settings are wrong and you have to set it up manually with the appropriate port-number.

Can you find the appropriate SMTP settings for your email server with a Google search?

Otherwise, can you tell us which email service you use so we can look up the settings for you?

pop-server.wi.rr.com and smtp-server.wi.rr.com. My wife has a user account on this computer and her email works fine except she's been getting messages that server certificates are out of date. She then is asked to trust the server certificate and mail works fine. These servers belong to time warner before Spectrum bought them out.
