Would the lighting be more even if the camera was in the center of the light? If not, how about more like a flat pan instead of a ring?

The light being above the subjects face will cast a downward shadow to some extent depending on the angle and height.

Having a camera dead center makes a very even light on the subject's face when lined up directly. Some people like this look, some don't. Personally, I would rather the light be a bit higher as I don't want the underside of my nose and chin to be lit up.

Both lighting setups described above would probably look somewhat similar in the end depending on distance to the subject. It won't be a stark difference. A person may want to tinker on what setup may work for them. Amazon offers the ability to mount a phone or iPad in the middle.

The product listed above is a more compact and portable setup, fairly simple.

My setup is a 3 light floor lamp that has high powered 5000k temperature bulbs. Since the bulbs light in a 360 degree angle and I pit it near a where a wall and ceiling meet, it throws light just about everywhere in the room. I have the benefit of a dedicated space near my desktop and laptop setup. Some people may need this more portable setup depending on their situation.
