The Mandalorian Drops Gina Carano Amid Incendiary Social Media Posts

.....Lucasfilm has spoken.

The producers of Disney+’s flagship series, The Mandalorian, have parted ways with original cast member Gina Carano, who plays Rebel shock trooper-turned-New Republic marshal Cara Dune on the Star Wars spinoff.

“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future,” a Lucasfilm representative said in a statement to our sister site Deadline. “Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

Formerly a mixed martial artist, Carano has been under fire from many fans for quite a while now, due to problematic things she has said/opinions she has supported all across social media. Carano has alternately been accused of being anti-trans (in part by appearing to mock the use of chosen pronouns), racist, anti-mask/anti-vaxxer, and a supporter of the attempted Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, among other things.

Most recently, an Instagram post of hers was interpreted to be an antisemitic defense of Nazis (stating that Jews in World War II were not beaten by German soldiers but “by their neighbors”). Though some argued her post was by no means absolving Nazis of wrongdoing, the #FireGinaCarano hashtag got trending again, with many asking Lucasfilm and Mandalorian EP Jon Favreau to oust the actress.

The Mandalorian was due to start production on Season 3 as soon as filming of offshoot The Book of Boba Fett had wrapped

you will be seeing less.....'Gina.........Carano........?!

It did take long.

She's been saying outrageous stuff with a focus on Jews and the Holocaust for years, is a rabid anti-masker who still insists that COVID is a hoax, and recently started in with anti-trans messaging.

People were wondering how she got hired in the first place.

#FireGinaCarano started trending hard last November and peaked again when she spoke favorably of the Capital rioters and promoted Parler.

Pedro Pascal's sister is trans. He's got a lot of pull right now and I'm guessing that behind the scenes a "it's her or me" message got sent.

Well, the first I heard about any of this was today. Guess that's what comes from not subjecting myself to participating in social media.

I'm not much further ahead of you.

I first heard about some of this a few weeks ago, as my girlfriend and I are big fans of The Mandalorian and she likes to peruse the TV and movie sights.

As I liked Carano in the role, and neither of us do any social media, she had an idea of the depths of the Carano problem and I had none.

It was a little sad to me when I first heard she was fired, because she spoke very well of the job, and said it came to her at a time she really needed it.

I don't know if that was financially or spiritually (not the typical definition).

I think she was brought back for the second season to set her up for a spin-off of her own.

Oh well, it is what it is.

No great loss. Her acting chops were mediocre at best.

Sucks for her. Daughter and I discussed this earlier.

I don't like being fired for ones thoughts or words that are NOT related to ones job.

OTOH she basically was a Rep for Disney, so everything she said and did could be construed and being at least OK'd by Disney if they did nothing.

This not her first strike, she must have known this was coming if she kept it up. But as I told my daughter, people getting fired "cancelled" for unpopular opinions now will lead to this in the future.

If I had said 1/10th of the things she did, I would have been fired from my current job. She signed a contract that pledged to be a good public ambassador of the Mouse. She knew she could lose her job,

Which made her perfect for the horrible dialogue ;-)

I think she fit the part pretty well, so it's too bad, but I don't think it's that great of a show anyway... I also have a bit of a feeling people should be able to say and even think stupid things and still work, but I understand peoples' feelings on this.
