Idaho lawmakers pass bill to kill most of state's wolf population

Idaho lawmakers have approved a bill authorizing the state to kill up to 90% of its wolf population, a measure championed by farmers and cattle ranchers that will become law if signed by the governor in the coming days.

Governor Brad Little has not indicated whether or not he supports the legislation and a spokeswoman said the office did not comment on bills awaiting his signature. The first-term Republican has six days to sign or veto the measure, which becomes law if he takes no action in that time.

The Idaho House of Representatives this week voted 58-11 to approve the fast-tracked legislation, which passed the state senate last week with backing from the agricultural sector, who say the wolves are killing or scaring off sheep, cattle and other farm animals.

"They're destroying ranchers; they're destroying wildlife," Idaho State Senator Mark Harris told his colleagues in support of the bill last week, according to the New York Times.

Idaho Fish and Wildlife in 2002 established a Wolf Conservation and Management plan that calls for the state to maintain a population of at least 150 wolves. Harris said that number had grown to ten times that number, or more than 1,500, at last count.

Wildlife conservation groups have called on Little to veto the legislation.

"The bill will waste millions of dollars of public funds on killing wolves, and threatens to ultimately return the species to the endangered species list and federal management," the Western Watersheds Project said in a statement on behalf of three conservation groups.

Gray wolves were delisted from the Endangered Species Act last year by the U.S. Department of the Interior, which said the population had sufficiently recovered to no longer warrant protection.

If Little signs the legislation, the state would be permitted to hire contractors to kill the wolves and hunters would have no limits on the number they could target.

Sounds like a great reason to get more 100 round magazines for our assault rifles....

or not.

(a pair of 30 rounders reversed and taped together are just fine.) Cool

Or maybe hire more wolf tamers.....

I live on a farm. If animals get into your property it’s because your fence is crap and/or your dogs are untrained. Tractor Supply, Rural King, the co-op, Amazon, they all sell fence supplies. Hire the dang Menonites or local Mexicans if you don’t have any friends. They’ll work without whining like a little bitch. The message out here in rural America is a simple one passed down through the ages: Suck it up, buttercup.

Idaho continues to collect the losers from states "rapidly going blue", seemingly as some red oasis for crackpots, Q-anon lovers, and retired law enforcement officers.

As the population grows, the native population drops.

(Just ask Native Americans)

Apparently, they're down to wolves now.

It won't be long until there's no sign of natives left, and then who or what will they choose for genocide?

Yeah, this is a bummer. Honestly, Boise isn't Idaho anymore. I've never seen anything like it, and it isn't good. However, I can't imagine the influx of people are not super liberal compared to what was here 30yrs. ago, but I can't back that up. The elected officials in Boise are a lot more liberal, but has that helped anything? Hardly. My opinion is most of the people moving here are ultra-selfish. They don't care, no matter their party affiliation.

Brad Little isn't going to veto. His family is a ranch family, so I suspect he'll listen to the ranchers. He's a decent guy, but I can't see it happening.

This strikes me as one of those “pwn the libs” things. It’s about all that Repubs have left at this point to excite their base, beyond making up stories like Biden’s-gonna-confiscate-yer-cheezburger.

Here in MN, they’ve made a nice comeback. We don’t have a ton of ranching in northern MN, and the native tribes have been supportive of the conservation efforts.

What we do have too many of (IMO, and as I understand) is deer. And the wolves will help that.

I don't think it's a pwn the libs thing. Most people in Idaho never wanted wolves, so I'm surprised it took this long. The increasing divide and warlike conditions between red and blue are probably an agitator though.
