USB for older laser printers?
#1
A friend would like to get his HP 2100M laser printer to work with a G4 iBook and OS X. What's the easiest and/or cheapest way to make it a USB printer?

I would make it a network printer personally. Get a Jetdirect box and set it up on his network, or direct to the ethernet port on the iBook. Way easier than trying to mess around with a parallel to USB adapter.

You'd make it a network printer by adding the proper "jetdirect" network card which can probably be picked up cheap on ebay.

$2 -- pretty sure any of these should work

USB-to-parallel cable is worth trying. Not all of them (it is said) work with Tiger.

Also, I just configured a JetDirect card in a LJ4Plus.

Doing so required Windows Professional and HP's free software.

That's right, Windows Professional.

Perhaps someone else has a Mac solution. I could not find one.

JetDirect's kept my HP 5MP connected flawlessly since 8.1
