For the last few months, they have been bugging me, first my salesman, then the manager today. He said they were not kidding and I did not have to buy a replacement from them. We bought two certified used from them about 6 months before the big shutdown so cars were readily available and they were dealing. He claimed they are getting requests for my car and would give me what I paid and possibly more. I told him I really didn't know what I would replace it with so turned him down. If I didn't need it, I would probably take him up on it.

With the price if diesel, would switching make financial sense?

Yup, my VW dealer wants my cherry 2004 VW Passat TDI and they let me know it last time it was in for some work. I declined. It’s obvious it’s because it’s a Diesel.

I get letters from my dealer every week telling me that my car's worth lots of money, up to about $5k over Bluebook.
Couple of problems with their proposal, even if they weren't gonna lowball me if I actually brought it in for an estimate: 1. Their price wouldn't cover a current model-year replacement since new car prices have risen so dramatically; and 2. There are no 2022s in stock anywhere anyway because of chip shortages and other manufacturing/logistics issues.
What's the point of selling if I can't trade up?

I get letters every month from the dealer I leased from, for my long end of lease 2015 and 2018.

I work for a company that gets big discount on new cars. Not going to go into details.
My boss ordered a new car. when it came in, the dealer said they would pay him 20k over the sticker price if he does not pick it up. he also paid many k under sticker price, so he made out quite a bit of money.
I am tempted to do the same, but I think the ship shortage is improving, so perhaps it's not as hot market now as it was 6-12 months ago.
Also Diesel is $2 MORE than gasoline around here, so even with improved mileage, I am not sure if it make sense

My Prius is worth 75% of what I paid for it in 2016, and I put 175 thousand miles on it since then.
If I could find a 2019 ish Prime for 25K my shoes would be burning rubber out the door.

Why do people want diesel? Even the modern cars are dirtier than gas.
