Had 40 checks stolen
#1
I had 40 outgoing checks stolen from outgoing mail on May 6th. The mailman physically comes into my office and picks up the outgoing mail from a holder on the desk. So somewhere between his hands and being delivered, 40 outgoing checks went missing.
I found out when they started showing up at ATM machines from Vegas to Maryland, with modified names and amounts on them. 5 were deposited, 1 I caught as it was being processed by a Navy credit union and I stopped payment on the rest.

I had that happen a bunch of years ago.
Bank changed my account and gave new checks at no cost.
YMMD, but whoever stole 'em has you name address and acct number.

Are you going to speak with your local postmaster? I find it odd that the criminal had a large number, if not all, of the 40 checks. Where might they have grabbed the entire batch?

Probably out of the mail truck that was left unattended and unlocked was my thought…

Can you be certain that the mailman actually picked them up that day? It seems like anybody that comes to the office could have taken the outgoing mail from that holder. Maybe even some other delivery person.

even that possibility would warrant a discussion with the Postmaster.

In 1992, I had the student loan check I was expecting stolen and cashed.
It turns out that several bags of mail were stolen from the local post office. The check I was expecting was in one of them.

I've watched guys steal from mail trucks while the postal person delivered that block.
