What settings do you use to import from CD to iTunes?

I use the iTunes-LAME audio encoder with a setting of --alt-preset standard. It does a fine job for my ears. http://blacktree.com/apps/iTunes-LAME/

AAC, 192 kbps, auto, auto, VBR

or

Is AAC better than AIFF for eventually sending them to an iPod?

AIFF is for home and car CD players and is the original format the music comes in

60+ megs per song...

AAC 192kbps for general use/iPod, MP3-LAME 192 or higher for other MP3-players.

I'm a little mystified as to why you don't simply encode a sample song at several different settings and decide for yourself ...

I used a friends iMac to load some CDs for another friends iPod. I think I switched from AAC to AIFF. Should I call her and tell her to switch back?
