I just bought a new 20" iMac G5. I just found out I am going to Beijing for a year. I must leave something here for the family. I was wondering what I should get for my year in Beijing. I don't want to spend a lot of money, but I have to stay in touch with my bank, investments, etc. What would be the best way, if any, for me to access my computer here, from there?
I also heard there is some gadget I can get to access my TV here. I will also want some kind of long distance phone service.
I don't want much, do I? I don't know how an old dumb guy like me got hooked on all these new conveniences. Any experience or suggestions?
Thanks,
Ol' man

That would be a slingbox. Lucky for you they just came out with Mac software. But you'll need a broadband connection and also unsure if China wouldn't block the signal being big on censorship as they are. Then again, they are also big on piracy, so worst comes to worst you could go down to the corner and get whatever movie you wanted for a couple Yuan.

Thanks! They told me I would have DSL hookup and Cable TV. Where do I go for this "sling box." Does this mean I need some Apple computer to run it in Beijing, or is it hooked up here?

Thanks! Sounds too easy. First time I tried this version of help. You guys are great! We have come a long way from my 2 tin cans, and a long string. They probably don't use crystals anymore for the radios.

Amazon, Best Buy, etc. Almost everyone sells them.

any VoIP service should work while you're in china. Skype might be a good option too. they'll both give you a US number.
