Cousin again trying to sell his iBook G4, asks for help
#1
My cousin is trying to sell his old iBook G4 (which was once my wife's iBook, years ago), and it won't sell. Here's his email:

I am listing this computer - but it WONT SELL. I listed it twice. I reserved at 450- it is a ibook G4 but its from 2003 I believe. built-in airport and all- look- it got 15 bids but no one wants to pay more than 400- so i know i can sell it, but i feel it may be worth alittle more after oooking at past auctions for this machine. tell me what you think.

Here's info from his auction:

Apple iBook G4, 3 years old. Works perfectly. All of the software updates have been installed. In excellent condition. Battery still holds the full charge as when I first got it (about 4 hours). I am only selling it in order to upgrade, but otherwise, it is in excellent condition. Laptop was mostly used at home and has little to no ware. I am also including everything that came with the laptop when I first purchased it: power adapter, instructions booklets, etc. Additionally: Carrying case included (a $50 value). This laptop is also equipped with Airport wireless software and Microsoft Office for Mac (a $150 value). Computer Specs: Version: 10.3.9 Build: 7W98 Processor: 800 MHz PowerPC G4 Memory: 256 MB DDR SDRAM Machine Model: iBook G4 CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.3) Number Of CPUs: 1 CPU Speed: 800 MHz L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB Memory: 256 MB Bus Speed: 133 MHz Boot ROM Version: 4.7.7f0 Serial Number: UV407021PGW

Thoughts, opinions, brickbats? I still think his expectations are too high in terms of cost.

[ADDED] His seller ID has 100% positive, but only 10 feedback ratings, if that makes any difference. Again, I'd give him $300 for it but not $450. I just don't think a 4-year-old iBook is worth $450.

[ADDED] I pointed out to him in an email that the completed items he's probably looking at are for higher GHz iBooks, and probably for 14" screens and/or with a lot more RAM.

As long as it was placed properly (category) on eBay, with decent pictures and concise text-formatting, it's free-market pricing.

A high reserve will slow things down a lot. But he sounds like he would be pissed with the 350 he might get otherwise.

In six months it'll be worth 300.

It's a 12". There were no 14" 800MHz iBook G4s AFAIK.

If the license for Office is legit and transferrable, then I would recommend he unbundle it from the iBook and sell it separately, and lower the price of the iBook accordingly. Heck, he might even make a little more money than he's currently looking for...

has he tried Craigslist.
not a lot of ram. he might want to add that it's got a combo drive.
is he including the original cds and reg info for Office? if not, it's not "a $150" value"

He can keep the case $50 value and the Office $150 value.
Let's see…
$450
-$50
-$150

I'll give him $250

The description needs to be rewritten. Lot of writing, no info.

A reserve or high starting price scares people off...
Starting it at $1/$10 takes some bravery, but may indeed pay off... (or not, that's the risk).

Agree with BGnR - lots of writing, no info. Just stick to the points:

12" G4 iBook - 800MHz
OS X 10.3.9 installed
256MB RAM
XX GB Hard Drive (there's no mention of it in his long-winded ad)
Airport
Case included
All cables/manuals included

That said, I just sold my 1.2 GHz iBook with 1GB RAM for $575 last month. And IIRC, weren't the 800MHz iBooks plagued with motherboard problems? I think $400 is about what it's worth.

I just did an ebay search for iBook G4s at 800Mhz (and various naming differences to account for spellings)

I found 15 iBooks that were complete and working.

5 of them went for above $450 (the ones that did, didn't go much higher).

Most of them sold for $400-ish.

The two that didn't sell were not your cousin. So, that tells me he either listed farther back than the completed auctions window, or that he didn't list it properly. (ie, bad title).

Reserves suck for pricing. I'd estimate about a 20% price hit if you use a high reserve.

If he wants it to sell, get a nice title together and list it as a BIN (if his account privileges permit it)

Apple iBook G4 800Mhz 256MB RAM/xxGB HD/Airport/Battery/Extras
Subtitle: (Battery holds a great charge! Airport Wireless card Installed!)

Then clean up the listing details. If he doesn't know HTML, he should at least use
to insert line breaks/returns.

Get at least 4 GOOD pictures. Clear, nicely composed, no background clutter, try to get a background that is a single color. Show the iBook while ON! On battery even better. Maybe a nice shot showing battery life.

Starting bid should be $9.99 - No reserve. This is how you get top dollar for mac on ebay. The market will give a fair price. Take it from a guy who regularly sells macs for more than he bought them for within a year of purchase...

and don't start with - 3 years old

That's terrible...
