4 160 WD SATAs in my G5? How?
#1
A friend with access to a lot of drives sent me a box of four new WD WD1600JS SATA drives. FREE. I'd like to install these in my DP G5 but how does one do that many multiple drives ?

Any info?

Thanks

But it's probably cheaper to just buy a 500GB drive.

Eh, I'll take them off of your hands if I have to.

Don't forget the sata card to go with that bracket. So it's gonna cost you over $200 to install those drives. A 500gb drive would be cheaper.

jdc,
could you go into more detail about where you got the individual parts and exactly what they are. I was about to spend $300 plus dollars to buy the Sonnet Jive/SATA card solution, and I could really use the money elsewhere right now.

Thanx.
wms out.

P.S. I was supposed to make the purchase yesterday, so if I find out fast enough, I will be able to save, otherwise, I have to make the purchase today.

it was nothing special, the card was a $50 SIIG 2 port SATA card, OWC sells them, for $60, but their house brand card is $50

OWC card comes with two SATA cables plus the option of hooking up external drives, thats nice touch

i needed some power splitters, $2.50 and 2 strips of velcro, which were free.

Holy crap.

I had no idea storage prices were this cheap.

I assume a serial ATA II drive will slip into my G5?

I'm going through the same dilemma. I got nine 200GB SATA drives at an auction last month really cheap. Sold 2 to someone on this list, and 4 to a friend. I have 3 left and am debating whether it's worth it to do anything with them, or just sell them. My G5 already has a 500GB and 250GB in it. Since I always make sure I have a backup of any drive I have, it looks like anything I do will only buy me an extra 200GB of space. I'm leaning toward the FW800 dual case that OWC sells for $119. None of the internal options (like the Jive solution mentioned above) appeal to me. I would set it up as a mirrored RAID.

But it might just be cheaper for me to sell the 3 SATAs, along with the 250 SATA internal, and the 250 IDE in the external firewire case and buy an internal 500GB SATA and another external 500. I just wish they'd hurry and announce those 1TB drives already!

oh, and yes, SATA II will work in the G5, but only at SATA I speeds.
