LEWISTON — Multiple people were shot in three separate incidents Wednesday night in Lewiston, according to early police reports.
Police, fire and rescue personnel descended on Sparetime Recreation on Mollison Way about 7:15 p.m. after a report of an active shooter. Shortly after, reports came in that there was another shooting at Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant on Lincoln Street.
Lewiston public information officer Derrick St. Laurent told the Sun Journal at about 8:15 p.m. that another shooting was reported at the Walmart Distribution Center on Alfred A Plourde Parkway.
Early reports, though unconfirmed by police as of 8 p.m., were that multiple people had been shot, with some fatalities possible.
The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office posted pictures of a suspect in the Sparetime shooting on Facebook.
Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for Maine State Police, said on social media that a staging area for police had been set up at City Hall.
“There is an active shooter situation in the city of Lewiston. Law enforcement is asking people to shelter in place. Please stay inside your home with the doors locked,” she said. “If you see any suspicious activity or individuals, please call 911.”
Gov. Janet Mills said in a statement she was aware of the shootings and had been briefed.
“I urge all people in the area to follow the direction of State and local enforcement,” Mills said in the statement. “I will to continue to monitor the situation and remain in close contact with public safety officials.”
Just before 9 p.m. as reports continued to emerge about a possible fourth shooting site, the city was eerily quiet. Just an hour earlier, dozens of sirens could be heard streaming throughout the city.
The city’s Emergency Alert system activated just after 8 p.m., indicating an “active shooter is located in Lewiston,” and advised people to shelter in place.
Several area towns were called for mutual aid from as far away as New Hampshire, according to reports on social media.
Lewiston schools were on lockdown while parent-teacher conferences were going on into the evening Wednesday.
“All, please get to a safe place if you are at or near a school for conferences we are going into lockdowns,” Lewiston Public Schools Superintendent Jake Langlais said. “I will provide more information as soon as it is available and appropriate. Right now, we need to let law enforcement do what they need to do.”
