Anyone Paint A kitchen Red?
#1
Just wondering because my wife is hoping that I will cave and at least allow a Accent Wall. I'm thinking it might make me feel angry in the A.M.

I agree that it will most likely look good w/ our stainless back splash, stainless Appliances and birch cupboards. However, sounds bright!

we've got 2 accent walls with "Merlot." We have an adjoining living room and dining room, so we have 1 accent wall in each. Looks great, was a pain in the @ss to paint (the real rich color took 3-4 coats of good quality Benjamin Moore paint).

Can I just tint the primer?

We painted our kitchen cabinets a deep red. They're the typical el cheapo kind without knobs even you see in apartments, cheap houses etc. I added wooden knobs; those are dark purple. Sounds gruesome but it isn't. Surrounding walls are a deep-ish shade of yellow.

Be sure to use a tinted primer and be prepared for at least a primer and two top coats. Red is hard to get good coverage with. You can always paint over the accent wall, if you don't like it. Just get a deeper shade to keep it from looking too bright.

Raplh Lauren Paint, sold at HD, makes a clear tint base for their deep/darker colors and it really makes a difference. Check out their color swatches they usually have good colors in the deep/dark shades. It is worth the little bit extra you pay not to have that white in the tint base. I think they may also have those little paint tester packs now that you can buy instead of buying a quart, but I'm not positive if HD has them or not.

I painted my daughter's room, 3 red walls and one black. Get advice as to which primer to use. I used 2 coats of Behr paint to get good coverage. Go for it!

We neglected to tint or primer, and it seemed to take, um, a thousand coats to cover well. On the other hand, our cabinets have a great textured patina sort of thing going on now caused partly by quite visible brush strokes all blended it --- sounds scary but isn't.

But you all are talking about walls, so nevermind ... Wink
