Cleaning up some old junk, selling it on eBay
#1
old GPS, old electronics I no longer need. Still functional.

I am thinking about starting at 99 cents and 7 day auction.

Buyer pays shipping.

Should I try to time it so it ends up on a particular day and time? I recall hearing a while ago that Sunday Night is a good option? can I list it now and set it up to start tomorrow night at 8 PM? or do I need to click submit tomorrow night at 8 PM?

Any other advice? thanks

You can schedule it in advance to start automatically whenever you like.

Sunday night is still a good night. I try to time it for early evening on the west coast, so it's not too late on the east coast.

I would sell buy it now with fixed shipping charges. If you just want the stuff gone, go with the auction, but these days lots of buyers do not follow up and just don't care. So it may not even be faster.

BIN with fixed shipping means the buyer clicks once and finishes the purchase. Bidding, buying, negotiating shipping... that's too much for many.

don't forget the 3rd forum here - that should be step one.

Yes, you can, but last I checked there was a small fee to schedule an auction (i.e. something like $0.10 or $0.25). Not a lot, but it can add up.

Depending on if you care about your seller star rating, you might consider doing free shipping. Just start the auction at $1 + whatever the shipping fee would be. That way, you get a 5-star rating automatically for shipping. Vs if the buyer pays separately, they can put whatever star rating they want for that, even if the shipping cost is the actual, real, and reasonable cost, they can still give you 1-star because theey thought it was too much.

If you're not going to sell a lot, then it doesn't matter, since you need at least 10 buyers to actually give you feedback before the star ratings will show up.

Of course, the flip side of free shipping, is that things actually might cost "more" for the buyer in some areas (i.e., I don't get charged tax on shipping, so if there's a separate shipping charge, I actually save a little on the tax).

And of course, if you're doing calculated shipping, you have to charge for shipping. Sounds like you're selling small things, so the shipping shouldn't be super expensive anyway. If you're selling anything large, something to keep in mind, if you choose UPS or FedEx for the shipper, is that eBay uses RETAIL rates and charges that to the buyer, but you'll get eBay's discount and your shipping cost will be lower. So, you "make" money on the shipping but at the expense of buyer's possibly being annoyed at high shipping charges (again, goes to the star rating).

Also, consider if you actually want to ship something for $1, or if you'd rather take it to e-cycling. Since that's a possibility with an auction. If not, then you might want to set your starting price a little higher. If you just want to get it out of the house and into the hands of someone that might find it useful, that's ok too! (I'm almost at that point!).

Scheduled listing is now free unless you have an eBay store.

time vs money

How much, realistically, do you expect to make $$ on selling these things?

Compared to how much time is needed to take photos, create listings (id do BIN as well), box (cost of box?), drive to UPS/USPS... and whatever else Im forgetting vs drop it all off at goodwill.

I put a minimum value on things that I will sell online at $20. anything less and I give it away, not worth my time. or, I'll bundle stuff with a minimum amount. $0.99 is just too low as I learned my lesson when I sold a camera flash on eBay years ago. I had to go through the hassle for $0.99. not again.

who would want an old GPS (maps from 2008) and an FPGA programming kit?

time vs money

It's not about money... mostly to keep the things out of the eWaste bin, or at least to pass the guilt of recycling these to someone else, LOL

I eventually plan to sell some cameras, and then yes, the 3rd forum may be a good staring point.

I already have an OWC case listed there, so far no interest at all.
