Meanwhile, in other news…
#1
…for only the second time in our country’s history, a cabinet officer was impeached (on the second try, by the narrowest (1 vote!) of partisan margins, for following the law (as best he could) and faces trial in the Senate.

Starting tomorrow.

You’d think that something so rare, so momentous, would have had a lot of news coverage. But when it comes with a self-caricature like MTG as one of the prosecutors, I think it’s best ignored as the meaningless attempt of political theater it is.

While the GOP is repeatedly bleating that we must honor the process by having a full, drawn-out trial, it looks like this whole farce will last a few days at most (says PBS and The Hill).

Don’t blink or you’ll miss MTG raging.

At the last minute, Speaker Johnson pulls out (impeachus-interruptus?), saying they don’t want to present their (fantasy-)case yet. Maybe next week.

Mike Lee (R-Another planet) says:

“We don’t want this to come over on the eve of the moment when members might be operating under the influence of jet fuel intoxication,” Lee explained.

:S

They’ve already lost Romney, who has acknowledged the reality that there are no actual high crimes or misdemeanors here. A simple majority vote can end the whole farce at any time.

Says Schumer:

“We’re going to move forward and resolve this as quickly as possible. Once again, impeachment should never be used to settle policy disagreements.”

Especially policy disagreements that are being intentionally (and cynically) prolonged by Republicans for possible political gain.

"We need to fix immigration NOW!"

"Okay, here's a bipartisan bill"

"No, not like that!"

WaPo:

Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) called the articles a “little bit odd” but recommended that Republicans “make the most of it.

“The issue of the border is just such a wonderful one for us to talk about as Republicans,” said Cramer. “My personal belief on it — the House did it, so here we are now, we might as well make the most of it.

They had a bipartisan - actually tripartisan! (R, D, and I) - chance to solve it and killed it like cowards when Trump ordered them to. These people don't give a rat's ass about the border outside of trying to make some political hay out of it.
