Well, yes, we previously said (and pushed for!) all the things these judges said, but we didn’t really mean it! Please don’t punish us at the ballot box!
Arizona Republicans who cheered fall of Roe U-turn to denounce 1864 abortion ban
Arizona Republicans denounce revived 1864 abortion ban in sudden reversal
Kari Lake among Republicans condemning ruling in reversal of previous stance as party flails over abortion ahead of election
She apparently changed her mind when this “great law” got resurrected by the recent court ruling:
Kari Lake, a Republican and loyalist of Donald Trump running to represent Arizona in the Senate, previously called the ban a “great law”, according to PolitiFact.
Per the Politifact link, Kari Lake went on record, saying:
"I'm incredibly thrilled that we are going to have a great law that's already on the books," Lake said. "I believe it's ARS 13-3603, so it will prohibit abortion in Arizona except to save the life of a mother. And I think we're going to be paving the way and setting course for other states to follow."
But, y’know, at the time, she was talking on one of those iHeart Radio right-wing nutjob podcasts, playing to the audience. Now that the dog has actually caught the car and abortion is banned in AZ, she’s pulled a complete 180.
Kind like Trump. What a bunch of weasels.

Not only Lake - other GOPers have been furiously rewriting their history and moving goalposts …umm… clearing up confusion over their abortion stands:
David Schweikert, an Arizona congressman who is facing one of the most competitive House races in the country this November, said he does not support the [AZ Supremos] ruling, but in 2022 said the fall of Roe “pleased” him.
Juan Ciscomani, another Republican congressman for Arizona, said the ruling was “a disaster for women and providers” and that the law was “archaic”.
The speaker of the Arizona house, Ben Toma, and the president of the state senate, Warren Petersen, who are both Republicans, also released a joint statement saying that they would be “listening to our constituents to determine the best course of action for the legislature”.
But that’s now; back then,
In contrast, on the day Roe fell, the Republican-controlled state senate released a statement declaring that the 1864 ban was in effect immediately. That statement unleashed confusion and chaos among abortion providers in Arizona, prompting them to stop offering the procedure out of an abundance of caution.
Yay, Roe overturned! Yay, 1864 ban, in effect now!
AZ SC: the 1864 ban is in fact in effect.
(Looking at polls) Boo, 1864 ban! We want to do whatever you voters want - both pro-choice and anti-abortion. Really! We’ll do whatever you want, whatever that may be!

BTW, an interesting ruling out of Indiana:
A three-judge panel on the Indiana Court of Appeals agreed to enjoin Indiana’s near-total abortion ban, as applied against a class of religious plaintiffs who had argued that the ban violates a state law protecting religious freedom.
I was wondering when this might come up.
Indiana became one of the first states to enact a near-total abortion ban after Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022. In September of that year, four state residents of various faiths and a group called Hoosier Jews for Choice claimed that the ban violated the state’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which was passed with great fanfare in 2015 under the watchful eye of then-Gov. Mike Pence. The American Civil Liberties Union’s plaintiffs contended that the almost total ban violates Jewish law, which provides that “a fetus attains the status of a living person only at birth,” and religious tenets that give priority to the life and health of the mother over that of the fetus.
So, which is it, Indiana GOP? Religious Freedom!, or Life Begins at Conception, a Fertilized Egg is a Person, and No Abortions for You, You Harlots!
:dunno:
Goes to the conservative Indiana SC next, to see if they can thread this needle.

They really need to carry their position from the moment it was conceived for it's full term.

C'mon, man!
Use that along with pictures of different Repubs saying the law was a good idea.
Ok, that could backfire, with MAGAts thinking it was a contrite, sincere apology.
Maybe.

After they gave it some more thought they decided that yes, they really did mean it after all.

Arizona abortion ban: Arizona House Republicans halt Democrats' effort to overturn 1864 law
Chaos erupted in the Arizona House on Wednesday as Democrats attempted to repeal the 1864 near-total abortion ban, only to be thwarted by the Republican majority.
The raucous event, unusual for the chamber, came a day after the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that Arizona's Civil War-era abortion law stands and laid bare the raw feelings and political divisions swirling around the issue.

Not quite how I read it.
'The fracas started when Rep. Matt Gress, a Phoenix Republican from a crucial swing district, tried to initiate a vote on repealing the law. '
It was Republican in-fighting that blocked the vote to repeal the law.

I think the part that part that bothers me most is no clause for incest and rape. I disagree with the whole thing but that part bothers me the most.
And there we go I just checked it out Arizona has legalized online sports gaming betting. NC just started this and it appears it's going to be sweeping the country IMO. So gamble all you want just not get an abortion in many states which that's still legal in NC but I suspect it will change with the installment of anti-semite bigoted racist Mark Robinson as Governor this Fall, he appears to be the front runner at the moment because the idiots in NC love him for some reason. Cooper cannot run again.

From Heather Cox Richardson’s letter today:
in 1864, a legislature of 27 white men created a body of laws that discriminated against Black people and people of color and considered girls as young as ten able to consent to sex, and they adopted a body of criminal laws written by one single man.
And in 2024, [only] one of those laws is back in force in Arizona.
Now, though, women can vote.
