Lots of data here, including the point that you failed to make with this post:

(hint, scroll down to the part about what type of weapons are used most frequently...)

I'm sure these stats make the families of the 6 dead feel more comfortable

As was clearly your intent with your original post.

This is a tragedy. Fortunately, the murderer only had a knife. Imagine what damage if he had had an AR-15 or worse and come back to us.

Those numbers are still consistent with what's in the USA Today database I posted, and plus if you read the USA Today methodology, they're picking up things that the FBI isn't (for one reason or another).

Data:

Homicide rate in Australia (per Wikipedia, 2021): 0.86/100,000.
Homicide rate in US (same source, 2021): 3.8/100,000 - 4.4x higher

Mass murders are not unknown in Australia, but are shocking precisely because they are so rare.

We had 656 mass shootings in 2024. On average, 118 gun deaths each day.

Mass murders in Australia are rare, their gun ban had no effect on the number of mass killings.

Mass killings were rare before, and remain a rare occurrence
