Refrigerator water filters question
#1
Ugh…the LG brand is $$. But on Amazon some of the generic ones don’t list where they are made. Even Googling made in the USA stuff is still shady.

Can I get away with a once a year replacement if the house is only lived in part time? It’s time to replace the filter, been in for a year.

Even Britta filters are more affordable - and I use that on a regular basis.

Suggestions for generic replacement is welcome.

We have used the Aqua Crest filters (available in multi-packs on Amazon) in two different refrigerators without issues, although neither of ours are LG. They offer several LG-compatible options from the looks of it. They are not made in the USA, however.

We just switched from a Westinghouse (20 years old?) to a new LG. I don't think I replaced the filter in the old one in the past 5 years. Just reset the button and the wife didn't notice.

Our city water is usually just fine - unless they're digging up pipes. So, the filter is there for the sediment every few years.

On the other hand, I liked the taste of the old filtered water better than the new. Maybe, I should have sampled it when we were checking them out.

I think it depends on how much you use it...

Be careful with off brands. We have one stuck in ours and have tried everything I could find online to try and get it out to no avail. I bought a dummy cartridge from Frigidaire to put in it's place because we put in a wholehouse filter and now I can't put it in there.

I've used Waterdrop with no issues.

What makes you think the LG OEM's are made in the USA? The box may be printed here, but I'd be very surprised if the filters are actually made here.

I did another search and finally found a video on how to get my type filter unstuck. I sure hope this works in my case because that filter has been in there too long. I plan to cut open the old filter if I manage to get it out. The comments at the video below says it works. This same filter is used in many Electrolux made refrigerators. Going to try this today. These filters are mounted inside typically in the upper right hand corner of the fridge not down underneath like some.

As above, be careful leaving the filters in too long. The filter will swell. If it is seated in a tightly fitting housing, you won't be able to get it out. Had that problem with a samsung filter.

Lizabeth,

The issue I've seen with fridge water filters is that they get flagged for replacement based on time, not actual usage. Same thing with the Aquasana under counter water filter I have in my kitchen and at my office. After X amount of time, I get a notification that the filter requires replacement. It's nonsense.

We have water for the ice maker in our fridge. We rarely use ice. Yet, the filter required "replacement" after X amount of time. It didn't matter that I've only had the ice maker fill its bucket a handful of times. So, we pretty much ignore it.

The filter for the kitchen sink pulls the same nonsense. The system told me it needed new filters about 4 months after we installed it. It definitely didn't need a new filter. Our water isn't _that_ bad. So, we ignored the notification. It's easy to tell when the filter requires replacement by the flow rate of the water.
