Memtest shows FAILURE page after page
#1
G5 tower, dual 2.3. Latest OS. 4 GB of OWC RAM.

Had some kernel panics - very, very unusual on this usually rock-solid machine. So I ran Applejack and then MEMTEST.

Memtest reported page after page of failure.
What is the next step?

What sort of failures? I remember once, Memtest (and Rember) was warning me of failure upon failure..it turned out that my CPU fan was busted and my G4 was heating up.

Try reseating RAM?

Run Apple Hardware Test?

Disconnect peripherals?

Good suggestions!

If you're going to reseat your RAM, use compressed air to blow out the slots in case something happened to get in there.

BTW, did all of this happen with new RAM or is it just something that popped up?

Wait, where is the RAM failure report?
Whatever you posted shows RAM Status as OK.

Apple Hardware Test is NOT good at finding Bad RAM.

The hardest thing to teach at any tech school is how to troubleshoot.

apple hardware test IS good at finding really bad ram. It'll tell you which stick is the faulty one IF it finds fault.

Remove pairs of sticks and see if you can isolate thge problem to a specific pair of sticks. If you can't, then the RAM is likely not at fault.

I haven't changed anything recently. The RAM is from OWC and I put it in when the machine was new, 18 months ago.

I don't seem to be able to find the Hardware Test for the G5 - every other Mac I have, there is one. but not for the G5.

is the Tech Tool Deluxe that came with Applecare for the G5 any good?

the failures are when I ran MEMTEST. Soon in the process, it began zooming through page after page of

FAILURE: 0x784409230392702-2085-0 ! = 0xa589233875420 type stuff.

After several minutes, I just shut the machine down.

I am not familiar with memtest, never ran it before.
