YouTube 20th Anniversary: 20 billion videos uploaded since 2005
#1
First few paragraphs from NBC news

Exactly 20 years ago, a grainy 19-second video titled "Me at the zoo" was uploaded to YouTube by one of its founders, quietly launching a then-small platform into the world.

Now, the Google-owned video giant says it is home to more than 20 billion videos. And it's celebrating. (The number was updated in YouTube’s blog post after the platform previously reported the figure was 20 trillion videos.)

The video giant commemorated the anniversary of its first video upload on Wednesday with a blog post unveiling new features, statistics and "easter eggs" for users of the platform.

"On average, there are over 20 million videos uploaded daily to YouTube," the platform said in its news release. User engagement with videos is also high, with the platform sharing that last year, on average, its videos "received over 3.5 billion likes from users per day."

The milestone comes amid the rise of the creator economy, which includes millions of social media personalities who make money through brand deals, platform monetization and audience subscriptions. Research from Goldman Sachs in 2023 predicted that the total market opportunity of the creator economy could reach $480 billion by 2027.

Yeah, I got an email from them this morning asking me to celebrate their 20 years with them by watching some Zen channel.

I think not.

Okay, I watched 5 min.

Interesting that the cake has 12 candles rather than 20, but that's ok.

The balloons and confetti didn't do anything for me. But, I did like the jazzy piano music!

The best part of what makes YouTube great is still there. Music. Live, Old, Flashbacks, Soul Train, Midnight Special etc. YouTube is the best thing on the internet.

The worst aspect of it are YouTubers. They weren't really bad until monetization took hold. A giant vat of attention whoars. I do have my favorites, but by and large, just getting kinda tedious. Corporations are just utterly subsuming them.

pRICE cUBE just mentioned Sony's neat new zoom lens. So I took a look. Apparently, after that, everybody that reviews camera stuff had that date when they could begin to yak about it. YouTube thinks I want to see every one of those videos. Stop.

I like Doug Demuro. But sometimes he'll mention how what he reviews is dependent on how well he'll anticipate the video performing. It's such a business now, instead of just a guy trippin' off of cars. I do like him though.

Just enjoyed a bunch of Luther Vandross clips.

Saw by happenstance my friend Ingrid, who just died, at the tail end of a Soul Train line video. I showed it to her husband and that made him happy. All those great grandparents.

Ingrid is the last dancer (a light bronze dress), looking all elegant and beautiful. She loved Egypt and always had a pyramid cut into her short afro her entire adult life. https://youtu.be/UhZFzrPsIwM
