OT: Boooo ….. nest gen1 & 2 losing support
#1
Remember when you used to worry about tech items wearing out and getting it repaired. Well now you have to worry about the omnipotent seller losing interest in supporting you. I bought my nest 5 years and really like the smart features.

Ugh, I’m not crazy about the smart features but remote access to changing the temp is pretty reasonable. I also have a fleet of nest protect smoke alarms- at least they have a path for those.

Just a reminder that open standards are best, but it’s annoying when proprietary options are superior hardware.

Yeah, that doesn’t seem right. Of course, google is the worst for abandoning things.

Since the drop dead date is only 6 months away, imagine the number of neat customers that are going to be caught surprised. I know they will send notices of some kind but I hacdvrfcimmrndrd and setup nest thermostats for a half dozen relatives. Don’t look forward to having to explain that they’ll have to shell out for a new unit but also go through hassle of reinstalling them. I did the installs myself during holiday visits. Damn it.

I’ve also read about late 2000s ford EVs that people bought used. And got hit with a shock when they got quoted $8-10k for a replacement battery by dealers. You could probably get the packs rebuilt but we were talking about buyers living in small towns or other areas where the 3rd party repair places for the batteries weren’t.

I also got the email but didn't look closely. I guess it'll continue to work as a dumb thermostat, but I'll lose the ability to use the app? Ugg, that sucks.

Aargh.

What should I replace it with ? I love the remote app ability.

The email they sent lets you buy a new one for $150 (discounted from $270)... and my local electric company has a $100 rebate, so only out for $50 (per device, I've got 2).

Bummer. Wonder if I should move to an Ecobee to be Apple HomeKit compatible.

Do you get the electric company rebate if you don't buy from them?
