One of my SSD enclosures is flaky. What do we like these days?

1TB NVME, Western Digital Black. Worked fine for maybe 2 years, and now it's dead. The Orico with the fan that somebody here liked is still going strong, but Orico isn't selling them any more.

Any suggestions?

It's giving me $15 off $65, but not 40% on top of that or instead of that.

EDIT: Ok, got it out the door for $39 for the USB4 version. The reviews are a bit lower than I prefer, but it's hard to tell which ones apply to this model, and which ones apply to the other, slower models.

The negative reviews on that case would be a hard pass for me.

It's also listed by Amazon as a frequently returned item, and it would seem for good cause.

With a plastic case, a fan failure could be catastrophic.

It's also mentioned the heat sink pads don't touch the heatsink, and that tech support said that was for airflow.

I might be willing to try a metal case with a fan, but not a plastic case with no real passive heat sink.

That fan is very small, and I wonder how effective it is.

I think this enclosure is a great concept with poor execution.

If that doesn't work, I saw a Sabrent USB 3.2 enclosure a few days ago.

I put a WD Black that thermally throttles in every case I had tried so far into this one
It doesn’t throttle. It’s a 20gbps USB, not Thunderbolt.

I stopped considering cases that don't split open, as yours does, so that any silicone heat sink will touch the metal case.

One case I have has the board portions sliding into the shell.

It's neigh impossible to attach silicone that will touch the shell, and get the board back into the case.

It both annoys and worries me that SSD sticks run so hot, and enclosures don't seem to shed the heat as well as I'd like.


I did get an Express 1M2 that I haven't populated yet.

It's USB4 not T4, but that doesn't make any difference for my use.

While I did get it to see how fast a couple of fast sticks might be (ADATA, Samsung Pro something), I also like the generous heat sink area.

I also have a couple of Envoy Pro SX enclosures.

It looks like they're discontinued and now only the FX is available, and only as a drive and not an empty box.

Somebody suggested using our spinsor’s enclosures. I’ve used three of them over the years. Two for ssd. And one ide. Not had a lick of trouble. And one was a scratch data disk for editing and photoshop files, so it really had gotten a work out.
