Test drove a SMART car today
#1
I was shocked to see a local dealer selling SMART cars. I convinced me wife to let stop in and go for a spin. It is very simple, but yet it has everything you'd need. AC, Radio w/ CD, 2 seats, windows, 4 wheels, and an engine. I was not expecting it to be as solid feeling as it was. It got up to 70 in a hurry on the highway. 50+ MPG with the gas engine, 70+ with the diesel. Unfortunately, the US has some screwed up laws preventing the diesel from coming into the US. Unfortunately, the sticker price smarts a bit too...$23k is a bit steep for that. I paid less for a Y2k VW Beetle TDi brand new. I'm hoping that the stick around long enough to make a dent and cost less in the US, but I doubt it will happen.

Where was this dealer located?
I am sure it is nowhere near me, just curious.

Cute. The convert looks fun for zipping around the city. I don't think I would take one the expressway though. This one is probably even more than 23K.

Sure they don't want a car coming into the US that gets that much mileage. With the new
low sulfur diesel I don't see why it would be a problem, other than fuel profits. Mercedes
is bringing back their big cars with diesels into the US, they're rated at about 35% high
mileage than their gas counterpart. .

Stupid laws? Emissions regulations are stupid?

It's the same reason there have been so few options in the past, the Euros can't meet emissions standards.

Those same laws apply to big rigs, full size pickups, medium duty trucks. They've all met the standards.

The only thing that keeps the diesels from being sold here is the Euros inability to meet emissions standards.

Base price will be $12,000

http://www.leftlanenews.com/daimlerchrys...12000.html

That is VERY DO-ABLE.

Was that an OFFICIAL dealer? Or someone that is bringing them in and marking them up?

WHERE was it?

The "Pure" entry-level model will start at $12,000. A better-equipped "Passion" model at $14,000 will add a stereo system and other convenience features. The convertible is only available in "Passion" guise, for $17,000.

How does a SMART car's crash test compare to a Cooper mini?
