Do you ever "tip" the garbage collector?
#1
We're getting ready to move, and for the third week in a row, we have a large collection of trash. In addition to the cans, we have tons of boxes and big bags of trash from clearning out the basement. This week, I even have an old set of shower doors, that I hope they take.

Should I give these guys each a $20? So far, they've taken everything, and I know that our town has some garbage limit, that I'm sure we're exceeding.

Anyway, I was going to give them some cash today, but I was wondering if anyone else had done this.

Yep.
They tend to "forget" the limits if a bit of green slides their way.
We have large item pickups once per month, but a tip makes the date flexible.

I tip them at Christmas. When I have excess trash I make it easy on them and bring it to the curb. In your case - 3 big weeks in a row and the fact that you won't be around for the tipping season - I'd show 'em a little love.

Like the tooth fairy, we never see the garbage man. Working all day will do that.

I'm having trouble believing there are still people who have garbage men that actually pick up garbage. Around here, it's been totally automated for years, and there's certainly no such thing as getting rid of extra trash. If it doesn't fit in the bin, we have to take it to the dump ourselves.

Wow. Real garbage men. I'm so jealous.

I've told them anything on the curb they can have.

It would be nice to tip them but do it after you're finished cleaning out.

My girlfriend lives in a fancier part of brooklyn and i helped her clear out a hideous loft from her apartment. We cut it into piles that were very neat and well within the rules of city trash pickup. The garbage men walked right past it on several pickups. Essentially, they were refusing to do their job. Why? In that neighborhood they get tipped every time someone throws out something slightly above the ordinary. Its a problem. Somehow her landlord took care of it but had it been up to me, I would have stood in front of the truck until they did their job.

You know, in my job as a teacher, I was never tipped for doing a good job. I'll bet our garbage men make more than I did.

I bet if you started "accidentally" tossing garbage in the yard folks would start tipping you!
The jobs where folks usually tip are jobs that can screw the customer.
