LEM Swaplist rules/Nannies are really going overboard...
#1
A few months ago, someone scammed a few members our of hundreds of dollars selling ibooks that didn't exist. Shortly after that, the list mom started instating a whole lot of rules that weren't in any way possible to enforce. A few days later, he posted a retraction on those rules (big surprise).

Later, one of the nannies started posting reminders that the rules had changed and that people had to include their city, state, and zip code. This is mostly redundant and as a zip code can cover both city and state. Not to mention that it should be the buyer's responsibility to acquire find this information or risk a bad sale.

Then that same nanny started posting frequent notices that they would be banning members who didn't include city/state/zip in their posts. http://groups.google.com/group/lemswap/b...a30b81d326

Today, a new nanny stepped in:

LEMSwap Nanny wrote:
Are you dumber than a 5th grader? Kyle posted the new rules. And sellers are
still breaking the rules. It¹s time to get tough.

If you break the rules once, you are banned for two weeks. After we
reinstate you, you will paypal 10% of the shipped price of all your deals
(selling or buying) to the nanny account at paypal. Think it¹s easy being a
nanny and having the responsibility of life and death in your hands?

Yes, life and death. Because if you break the rules after the first time you
are globally banned from all LEM lists for life. That would mean death to
me. I couldn¹t ban people for breaking the rules. Or ban people because I
never liked them or they hurt my feelings or have better Mac stuff than I
got.

Nannies are a special breed. We hold the power to ruin your miserable lonely
lives by banning you from buying the only thing that means anything at all
to you and that is old Mac stuff.

Follow the rules or die.

Thanks,

First off, opening the e-mail with an insult to all members? That's pretty rude, isn't it?

Banned for a week? LEMSwap members have NEVER followed the rules as a whole. There are many rules you're supposed to follow for each post and have always been many people who didn't follow them.

Now, they're going "make" people paypal 10% of all shipped deals (buying AND selling, WTF?) to the nannies? How in the world do they expect to enforce this?

the last emanation of lem swap jumped the shark because the nanny wazzed out. It's happening again. Oh well. Back to ebay and craigslist.

yeah, i got a warning for posting improperly twice. both times were completely innocent mistakes. the google groups interface is annoying in that the "reply" button replies to the list. also, the idea that posting your zip code provides some protection is...uh...i don't get it.

Is that poster actually a "nanny" with actual powers, or someone attempting to parody an overly-oppressive moderator? I don't peruse LEM-Swap much these days, but this seems like a (very bad) joke.

A quick search of the swaplist shows they've posted more than a few "nanny" postings.

I assume that if they weren't, they'd have been banned, the posts removed from online.

Let's make a deal.

>>Is that poster actually a "nanny" with actual powers,

All posts must be approved by a nanny.

My understanding was that all posts by 'newbies' needed approval. After a trial period, you were taking off the waiting list and your posts were allowed to be directly posted.

It's all about the target, "low-end", market Wink

Are the rules just posted somewhere in the forum? I'm not familiar with that part of their site at all. If the users don't specifically have to agree to them, they can't be enforced.

The rules are on this page, a little ways down.
