This is my first house and it came with one. The previous owners had it in a window resting on a wooden frame they created. I want to put it in another window though and have seen where people hang them up with a couple of chains with hooks drilled into the side of their house. Is that all the support they really need?

I guess it would depend on the strength of the chain and where it it attached.
Remember you add water to the swamp cooler. It isn't much, but it will add a few pounds.

I'm going to guess those chains are very carefully anchored into wall studs.
(or should be)

I've used both methods for coolers and a/c. Swamp coolers are bulky and heavy so you have to use a bracing system that will support the size and weight., as well as allow access to the pads and inwards for cleaning and repair. Chains will work but they have to be heavy duty enough to support the load and they also have to be firmly secured to both the unit and the structure. Think overkill here unless you know an engineer. In the old days a hardware guy would be able to recommend the right stuff but it's iffy now. Still, I'd asked, since often former construction people take sales job when they get tired of the heavy lifting.
