Possible deal?
#1
I have a line on a 15" Macbook Pro 2.16 core duo - 120 G HD, 2G Ram for $1K - Only 4 months old. Methinks excellent price.

In discussion with the seller, I mention I'm trading up from a 15" g4 powerbook 1.5 (80G HD, max ram and a bit of Applecare left) and he mentions that his daughter is currently using a Lombard and he might be open to taking my old PB as part of the price - question is - what is fair?

Search of completed sales on Ebay yield a price right around $700 - but I don't thin he is going to go for that - given the situation - what would you offer?

One way to look at it is " how much is it worth to go from your laptop to the newer one?" The do the math.

Otherwise, I think you're right. It is fair to assume that if he is giving you a good price on his he would expect the same favor from you.

If it were me, I'd calculate what you WOULD get for it at resale to another party then suggest that... or perhaps $50 less because of the simpler transaction.

If he wants it for a whole lot less, stick to the original deal for his (cash) and sell yours elsewhere.

I just sold my powerbook almost exactly like yours (with Applecare unitl 12/07) for close to $1k on ebay. This was less than two months ago.

At the price you're getting the MBP for you can take a hit and offer $625 trade-in value for your PB.

I think a Pro for $1000 is a great deal if it has some good number of Ram especially.

2 Gig o'ram in the pro.

Another downside is that with a "trade in" type deal I wouldn't have the ability to migrate my stuff from the old powerbook -

Clone your drive in the PBook to an external drive and make it bootable. Verify it boots properly and you can then use migration assistant (though you won't be able to boot with it since the MBP has a different boot scheme).

If you don't have an external drive buy one, you can then use it as a backup of the MBP!

I already have a SuperDuper clone - done regularly that boots - can you tell me more about how to migrate from a clone?
