New Mini have troubles running Leopard?
#1
Would like to get one of the new Minis. However, someone on another board mentioned in passing that it would not be able to run Leopard. No reason was given or any other proof. What do you think?

no problems. I say that with 99.99999% certainty. How many 4 year-old macs do you see that are able to run 10.4 with no problems? Answer: lots. I run it on several old g3 ibooks and an old G4/500. while it's slow, it still runs everything I throw at it.

with that sort of track record, why would apple prevent leopard from running on a current system? that would be suicide for them. How would they sell millions of copies if they prevented it from running in all but their most current pro-level machines?

man, if I researched every absurd claim found on the internets, I'd never have time for anything else...

The problem is that a Mini's got limited video capabilities, a slow boot drive and not much RAM while Leopard is a resource hog the likes of which most Mac users will never have seen or imagined.

But it should run Leopard. Maybe not as fast as people would like. But it IS Apple's budget-model.

Leopard build 9A466 doesn't appear to be anymore of a resource hog than 10.4.10. In fact, it may be less of a hog (I get fewer spinning beachballs in 10.5 than in 10.4.x). I doubt that the mini will take advantage of the graphics capabilities of Leopard, but don't know this for sure.

Try 9A499.

The mini might not handle Core video, I have no idea.

But just as some Macs' video couldn't provide Quartz Extreme effects but still ran X, I imagine the mini will handle Leopard well enough for most people.

macphantic, nice to know that information. Thanks.

All the Intel minis will be able to run Leopard fine. They will just be a little pokey compared to the 64 bit Santa Rosa and later Macs from now on.
