…before I pull the trigger. I'm interested in the SmartUpdate feature. Ok, so I make a complete backup that takes forever, but that's cool. Then, I go about my business on my main hard drive, creating files, deleting files, etc. On my next backup, I choose the SmartUpdate feature. The program does a scan to see what's new, and copies only those files over. But does it do a comparison scan of what's not on my hard drive and delete the files off of the target drive that are not on the source drive?
Does this make sense?

Yes, it will delete files from the backup that had been deleted from the original. It's entire goal is to make the backup an exact copy of the original.

What GGD said. You get an exact clone of your drive at the time of the Smart Update. (Mine takes me about 6 minutes a night via FW800.)

"...except the temporary and system-specific files that Apple recommends excluding."

...Also, there's an advanced option to NOT delete files from the backup (tho' it will still write-over changed files) if that's what you want.

Yep.
Provided, of course, you've specified a bootable backup format onto a bootable device...

I have noticed it can sometimes fail to work when scheduled if Itunes is on and playing.
Other than that it works like a charm.
