ACL problems on boot disk

VMWare fusion wouldn't run because of a permissions problems. It ran find two days ago. I ran disk utility and I got a long, long, very long chain of "ACL found but bot expected on..." errors. Logged in user is an administrator.
What could have caused this? I don't remember doing anything strange in the last day or two (at least with my computer).

Elves.

Possibly some sprites, but most likely elves. Certain dwarves & gnomes have been known to cause permission errors, but not the ACL errors.
